Chega Convention. Ventura wants to be big and already suffers from growing pains – Observer

André Ventura pointed out that Chega went from being a party criticized by everyone to a “party that everyone wants to associate with.” And that, therefore, went from “a party that many thought could not make a difference to the only party that makes a difference in Portugal” and “a party that many said should not be legalized, the one that everyone fears.”

The Chega leader promised to “give everything” he has “to be in second place in the presidential elections in January” and also to “give everything” so that in the next elections he is third. “and send the left block to the place it should be“. It was there that the delegates got up and shouted at the most apotheotic moment: “Ventura, Ventura, Ventura.” He also said, setting a goal for the mandate, that he has the “ambition to want the second round in the Presidential elections and to be third in the legislative elections and be the big surprise in the municipal elections next year.”

But minutes later the bar rose. Ventura did not limit himself to saying that it was in a position to be the “most voted party” in the country and said that he wanted to read on the giant screen of the next Convention, as the epitome of Chega, the indication that he is the “third with more chambers and more presidencies together ”and added that everything will serve in“ January to defeat Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in the second round of the Presidential elections ”.

In dramatizing the speech, Ventura again said that he is willing to “give his life for this”, complaining of “permanent defamation everywhere” and “reptilian” attacks. He added: “The more they attack us, the more strength we have.”

André Ventura sat down but got up shortly after to quickly present his proposal to reform the party’s statutes. The first consists of extending the governing bodies of the party by one year, that is, from three to four years so that “the bodies are accountable for the electoral cycle and not by half.”

In addition, the Chega president also wants the partisan sections of the party (local party structure) to be directly elected by the rank and file instead of being appointed by the district political commissions. “This will involve all of our municipal politics,” says Ventura, preparing the party for the electoral battle that follows the presidential one and empowering the delegates at the Convention to elect the municipal party representatives.

At Juventude do Chega, Ventura wants to “avoid the multiplication of destabilizing structures”, which is why he wants greater control. The proposed reform of the statutes establishes that “they are not elected directly, but by the national leadership” and, thus, it ensures that Youth is here to help us, “he argued.

The latest proposal is the consecration of direct elections (open to all militants and not to the exclusive election of the delegates to the Convention) in Chega, as happened last weekend, with the reelection of the leader by more than 99%. “With this change, I believe that we are on the path of the most evolved parties in Europe, without fear of elections, scrutiny and without fear of asking the entire party to elect its president.”

Chega is growing and with him comes the growing pains: the internal guerrilla. The former head of list Chega por Leiria, vice president of the Leiria district, Luís Paulo Fernandes, presented a motion of censure directed at André Ventura and the district president, Ana Ferrinho. The former municipal deputy of Pedrógão Grande was recognized when he criticized the leadership and said that it was “regrettable” that he did not know what procedures were necessary to be delegated to the Convention. He also complained that it was necessary to have shouted in order to enter the last National Council of the party.

He ended up being applauded by some in the room. The motion also calls for the withdrawal of the political trust of two militants. In one of them, one of the reasons given is “misconduct on social networks”, with Luís Paulo Fernandes complaining of having been attacked on social networks on pages such as “Pai de Abutres” or fake Facebook profiles such as “Fofinhos de Leiria” . ”.

A short time later, the president of the Leiria district, Ana Ferrinho, also responded with a motion of censure, but to the National Council of Jurisdiction. Chega, also a militant No. 62, said that the list that competed with her was illegal and attacked the “boastful and promiscuous position of the Council of Jurisdiction, which does not respond and does not allow resources against decisions and attitudes of clear favor to friends and disadvantage of not friends, notorious, offensive and harmful to various districts from north to south of the country ”. In addition, she also proposed “an internal organ or mechanism of the party to appeal the decisions of the National Council of Jurisdiction, so that they are not immediately sovereign or only appealable outside the party (Constitutional Court).”

There were whistles and applause, which led the president of the Convention Bureau, Luís Filipe Graça, to warn about the imminent entry into television rights: “Let’s go live, so I ask delegates to behave as required by the Convention“.

One of the delegates, before presenting the motion, also tried to defuse the internal conflict by praising an external enemy: “Yesterday I thought that our enemies were outside, in Praça do Giraldo. Caged behind bars is fine, which is where they should be. ” He also said that he thought yesterday’s demonstration “the Berlin wall, the communists on the other side who want to go through here and us on the other side, who don’t want to spend anything there“.

The presentation of motions began before lunch and will run until the afternoon. In addition to the motions of no confidence in the governing bodies, there are also documents that point to problems identified by the delegates. An example of this is a motion, already presented by Filipe Carvalho.
