Catarina Martins: I don’t think there are conditions to make the budget proposal viable – State Budgets

The leader of the Left Bloc has just announced that the Bloc should not make the State Budget proposal viable for 2021. “I don’t think BE is in a position to make the State Budget proposal viable,” said Catarina Martins, in an interview with Antenna 1.

The party coordinator also highlighted what she considers a different behavior on the part of the government. The last time he spoke to the prime minister was “in the middle of last week.” “This time and a little different from other budgets, there was no meeting to close the negotiations before the OE proposal was delivered,” he says. After that meeting, the Bloco and the government exchanged “some documents on some of the proposals but there was no meeting to conclude the negotiations,” he accuses.

Still, Catarina Martins says the BE keeps its proposals on the table and says it is available to speak to the Prime Minister again. “It is not the government that unilaterally decides to close the negotiations.” Asked by Antena 1 whether it is worse for the country to cause a political crisis, the leader of the blockade replied that “the political crisis only exists if there is no budget that responds to people’s lives.”

The Bloc complains that the Prime Minister closed negotiations without an agreement in three fundamental areas for the party: the response to the anticipated wave of layoffs; strengthening of the SNS; and Novo Banco.

Regarding Novo Banco, the BE coordinator regrets the Government’s lack of openness to carry out a new audit of Novo Banco. “What we have had so far have been formal audits. But they do not investigate how the impatience of the new bank is recorded. It is not serious that the state has to fulfill a contract even when it is believed that the other party is doing something illegal,” he he claimed.

As for the solution of having a bank loan to Novo Banco that saves the State from a new injection in the bank, Catarina Martins is skeptical. “We can do many tricks, but it is a loan, someone will pay it. And if it goes through the resolution fund, the taxpayers pay it,” he accused, recalling that once again Lone Star will be awarded.

The other big dossier that keeps the Left Bloc out of this budget proposal are the measures in the labor sphere. The document, he defends in the same interview, has to tell the country “how we respond to the wave of layoffs, how we protect work. The Government refuses to prohibit layoffs in access to support. It does not give conditions to maintain employment. We all agree. ” that a great incentive is needed for the economy and companies but it must be in the name of work and wages ”, he stated. “Support for the economy must have strong counterparts in employment.”

Finally, there is a divergence in the area of health that has fueled tough discussions between Catarina Martins and António Costa in Parliament. The Block is not convinced of the government’s commitment to reinforce personnel and recalls breaches and delays in achieving what was agreed in the State Budgets for 2020.

We have an extraordinary crisis that requires courage and a context difficult for the left to understand, especially because the Socialist Party has not complied with what was agreed in 2020 on health and social protection. BE is not available to accept the announcement of measures that are not scheduled. and that its dimension is not measured ”, he concluded.
