This Friday, the mayor of Porto revealed that the works of the Campanhã Industrial Slaughterhouse have already been delivered to Mota-Engil, after having received the green light from the Court of Accounts in April.

“There is good news. Today we delivered the Municipal Slaughterhouse to Mota-Engil, it was today. It begins to count today [o prazo]”he said on the sidelines of a meeting with the Secretary of State for Infrastructure to discuss mobility in Greater Porto.

The independent reiterated that the Campanhã Industrial Slaughterhouse project is “perhaps” the most important work for Oporto “in ten years”, considering the impact it will have on an area of the city that continues to worry the mayor today.

Moreira acknowledged, however, that a pandemic could have an impact on the evolution of the work, which is expected to be completed in two years.

“Now we know at least that things are going to happen. The biggest delay was not because of the pandemic but because of the Court of Auditors. It is clear that the pandemic is causing some limitations in the works. We know that, often, our suppliers even have labor, but materials are lacking, for example, ”he explained.

In addition, as with other labor fronts in the city, the appearance of infected workers can lead to work stoppage, something that today is not possible to predict.

“This is the time for public investment. This is the time when municipalities and the state must heat up the economy. We are happy to have the capacity to borrow for this, we will continue, but talking about terms today is much more difficult than long time ago”. one year ”, he defended, adding that in the municipal budget for next year he will bet heavily on public investment.

In April, the Court of Auditors (ToC) gave the green light to the project for the former Campanhã industrial slaughterhouse in Porto, which had been awaiting a decision on the appeal filed in February 2019 for more than a year.

The visa to the contract for the conversion and exploitation of the Slaughterhouse for 30 years and for 40 million euros, which the municipal company Go Porto wanted to sign with Mota-Engil, was denied by the TdC on February 4, 2019, which pointed out several illegalities.

In February, on the sidelines of a visit to the construction site of the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal, the mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, accused the TdC of carrying out a “drawer veto” on the project, urging that court to make a decision. so that the municipality comes up with another solution.

In the old Industrial Slaughterhouse, deactivated 20 years ago, an area will be created for the installation of companies, art galleries, museums, auditoriums and spaces to host projects of social cohesion.

In the project of the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, in partnership with the Portuguese, from Ooda, one of the key elements is the covered pedestrian street, which crosses the space from end to end, connecting with the hanging garden on the Via de Cintura Interna ( VCI) that will give access to the Estádio do Dragão metro station.

Another key element is the covered pedestrian street, which crosses the space from end to end, connecting with the hanging garden over the VCI that will provide access to the Estádio do Dragão metro station.

Mota-Engil is obliged to comply with the program outlined by the municipality for the next 30 years, and at the end of that period, the teams return to the municipal level.

The autarky, which will occupy part of the old Slaughterhouse, is in charge of carrying out cultural revitalization projects, involving the community and affecting social cohesion.
