Guimarães is making efforts to establish structured and permanent relations with Kazakhstan, talks that follow the visit of the Kazakh ambassador in Guimarães, Daulet Batrashev, which took place on September 29, said the mayor, Domingos Bragança. .

The mayor said, quoted in a statement, that “a cooperation or twinning agreement is being prepared with Turkestan, one of the historic cities of Kazakhstan, with an archaeological record dating back to the 4th century, which is considered its historical capital after having this status from the 16th to the 18th centuries ”.

The ongoing talks are primarily aimed at establishing preferential economic and cultural relations, focusing on areas such as education, tourism and humanitarian actions.

Kazakhstan, the state of Central Asia, is the ninth largest country in area and 63rd in population, with approximately 19 million inhabitants. Made up of 140 ethnic groups from 18 religious denominations, Kazakh society is an example of inter-ethnic and inter-religious pluralism and tolerance. With abundant natural resources, where oil and natural gas are added, it is considered the most economically advanced country among the republics that became independent from the former Soviet Union.

“Kazakhstan is an excellent opportunity to diversify the traditional markets of our regional economy, while, in cultural and patrimonial terms, it allows the establishment of bridges and contacts with a region of the world with which the institutional relationship and between citizens has been too scarce. ”Says the mayor, adding the idea that it will also be an opportunity with enormous potential for the creation of new source markets for tourism in Guimarães.

The rapprochement between Kazakhstan and Guimarães is the result of the opening of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Portugal, which has allowed the intensification of bilateral cooperation, as well as the carrying out of several business missions to create joint ventures and the implementation of investment projects.

Domingos Bragança also mentioned that a Kazakh Consulate is planned in Guimarães, a decision that, according to the mayor, “passes through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Minister”, but which will be a good opportunity for Guimarães to establish itself internationally.
