Bruma: «That Sporting is champion, it is my heart club»

With a very good season at Olympiakos, Bruma does not forget the National Team and Sporting. The 26-year-old winger has nine international appearances and believes he is doing what it takes to return to Fernando Santos’ options in time to be called up for the European Championship.

In an interview with More soccerHaze seems more talkative, even more confident. Little is left of the shy and fearful child of words. Proof of this is the demonstration of the public’s love for Sporting, the club where he began to play in Portugal.

Bruma has a contract with PSV Eindhoven until 2023. In Athens he already has 23 games and five goals.

Maisfutebol – Are you satisfied with your time at Olympiakos?

Bruma – In fact, yes, it is being my best season in recent years. This is what he wanted with this loan. I needed to have a coach who trusts me and I am very satisfied with the choice I made. My football is still inside of me and I needed to play regularly. I must thank Mr. Pedro Martins for his confidence.

MF – How did Pedro Martins convince you to go to Athens?

B – I was in Eindhoven and Pedro sent me a message. I finished the game, read the message, and called the man. “Sir, it is honestly very difficult for me to get PSV out.” The lord convinced me immediately. ‘Son, come here and you will be fine, believe me and everything will be fine.’ I thought a lot about the conversation for a week. I made up my mind at the last minute and asked PSV. It was not easy, but they accepted. I called Pedro Martins and gave him the good news (laughs). The Lord has helped me a lot, at a time when I needed him.

MF – Bear in mind that Mr. Pedro Martins believes in you and likes you.

B- It’s true, I feel that Pedro likes me. I can only be happy. I want to help you, he is a fantastic coach and here everyone wants him. Treat all players well and have the squad in hand. No one can point out anything to you.

MF – Has Bruma played more on the left or on the right this season?

B – I’ve almost always played on the right and honestly, I don’t like it that much (laughs). I had to adapt, because in recent years I got used to it from the left and looking for the inner areas. But it went well.

MF – Did you leave PSV because you were disappointed or more because of the good pressure from Pedro Martins?

B – It was not so bad at PSV, but I wanted to play more and have many minutes of competition. The PSV coach was counting on me. But Pedro Martins convinced me, I liked his approach and I wanted to take this opportunity. It was not bad in Holland.

MF – The championship is going well and in the Europa League they lost the tie to Arsenal by very little. Was it hard for you to leave like this?

B – It costs, it’s true. The Greek league is practically won. In the Europa League we were unlucky. We fight to the end, we create problems for a great team like Arsenal. We had merit and we did a good campaign. I have played every year in the Champions League or in the Europa League and that is what motivates me the most. They are the best stages and I have to enjoy them.

MF – Is the Greek championship at the same level as the Portuguese championship or is it a little lower?

B – There are two good championships. In Greece there are four main clubs (Olympiakos, PAOK, AEK and Panathinaikos) and the others are medium in size. Even in this it is similar to Portugal. It is a good league to be able to stand out and take a step forward. Whoever is in these championships is always close to reaching the best championships.

MF – At Olympiakos there are three more Portuguese on the squad. Tell us a little about each one.

B – I’ve known them all for a few years. José Sá and Rúben Semedo accompanied me in the A National Team and Semedo is an old friend from the Sporting era. Tiago [Silva] He is a quiet boy, always in his corner, more reserved. Sá lives in his world. Enough, don’t talk to anyone, still half asleep (laughs). Then we talk to him and there he wakes up. Semedo is the most playful of all, he does not know when to stop, he is always playing.

MF – Is Semedo the person closest to Bruma?

B – Yes, he’s the one I spend the most time with. Sometimes the house comes here, we watch TV and play Uno [jogo de cartas].

MF – Do you still remember your debut in the Sporting first team?

B – Of course, it is unforgettable. I was part of team B and they informed me that they were going to promote me. In the first week, Professor Jesualdo kept thinking about me. It was hard. How I had to pass the ball, where I had to put myself. After a month there was another player, things started to go very well for me. Jesualdo is really a teacher, he had a lot of patience with me. I learned a lot from him and I can only thank him. If it weren’t for him, I don’t know where I would be.

MF – Left Sporting eight years ago. Lose?

B – Sporting has always been my heart club and they have always given me everything. Make him champion, finally. I have nothing to point out to anyone. We parted ways in 2013, at that time it was what I thought was best. I wish you the best of luck and that you win the championship this year. Things are going well this year, I am still watching the games here in Athens. Rúben and I played there, Sá played for Benfica and Porto, Tiago was for Belenenses.
