At the age of 20, Francisco Guerreiro is making his career in the sub-23 category, losing, in September, the opportunity to run the Volta to Portugal for the national team, after a case of covid-19 that took that team out of the race .
“This was a very difficult year for Portuguese cycling and for young people my age. There were few races and it was difficult to get results. For now, I will do it one more year here in Portugal, and God willing that one day I can make the leap , since he [Ruben] did, “he said.
The outburst of the youngest of the Warriors is in line with what “every cyclist of this age dreams of and works for”, that of running abroad, although today “enough opportunities” open up.
“In Portuguese cycling, a few years ago, the young strata were more devalued. They did not have so many opportunities. With these cyclists appearing outside, who are new and who are already showing enough results, there are enough opportunities for more results to come out,” he said. .
In addition to the stage, Rubén Guerreiro also established himself as the first Portuguese to win an important classification in a grand Tour, when he was crowned “king” of the mountain in the 103rd edition, which today ended in Milan.
These results may, in addition to opening doors for more Portuguese to rise to the top, further motivate Francisco, at a time when, he said, he is still finding the specialty.
“I am still very young, I am finding myself as a cyclist. I like to climb, but I feel … I am a cyclist who works against the clock, who likes to sprint. I am still discovering myself as a cyclist,” he explained.
The truth is that he has a privileged mentor at home, who “always tries to see the best” in his younger brother, “although sometimes it is difficult to say things as they are.” “He always wants the best of me, I try to screw my head.
