The mayor of Braga, Ricardo Rio, is one of the more than 100 Portuguese personalities who joined the ‘Vaccine for all’ campaign, which advocates universal and free access to the covid-19 vaccine, the municipality announced today.

The signatories consider these vaccines to be a “global common good” and must be “free from any patent rights belonging to anyone”.

For Ricardo Rio, quoted in a press release, it is essential to guarantee universal access to the future vaccine, regardless of nationality or economic capacity: “Covid-19 and its effects are more significant in the poorest population, therefore it is imperative to ensure vaccination for all ”.

The mayor emphasizes that this “is the only way to fight effectively against the pandemic” and this campaign does not intend to impose vaccination, but “to guarantee access to all people who want to be vaccinated.”

Launched in Portugal by the Ubuntu Leaders Academy, a project of the Padre António Vieira Institute, the campaign is associated with the initiative of the Nobel Peace Prize “Declare the covid-19 vaccine as a global common good”,

António Ramalho Eanes, Joana Marques Vidal, Bagão Félix, Mr. Manuel Clemente, Mr. José Tolentino de Mendonça, Marçal Grilo, Isabel Alçada, Isabel Jonet, Silva Peneda, Lídia Jorge, Luís Represas, Laborinho Lúcio, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, Nuno Lobo Antunes, Morais Sarmento, Pedro Norton de Matos and Pedro Roseta are some of the 118 Portuguese personalities, from the most diverse areas, who have joined this initiative.

The ‘Vaccine for all’ campaign advocates the creation of a mechanism that determines the “fair return on investment in research for the discovery of a covid-19 vaccine”.

On the other hand, the signatories consider, “the results of the investigation should be in the public domain, making them available to any production unit that undertakes to operate under strict international regulatory supervision and only for those units.”
