British President Boris Johnson has assumed that granting Scotland independence powers was “a disaster” and has refused to hand over additional powers to Edinburgh, “Reuters” advances on Tuesday, November 17. The statement by Johnson, who is currently in prophylactic isolation after coming into contact with a positive person, did not sit well with the Scots, who are pushing for a second referendum to achieve independence.
This second referendum for independence, already after Brexit, could divide the United Kingdom into different parts. According to the opinions collected by “Reuters”, the majority of Scots now support the independence of the territory, after observing the way in which the government of Boris Johnson approached the new coronavirus pandemic and the Brexit crisis.
In a referendum dating from 2014, Scots rejected the country’s independence at the polls, voting 55% against. However, the pressure of a non-agreement on the issue of Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic have damaged relations between the two countries.
The statement was made in conversation with British lawmakers from the Conservative party, assuming that the decision by Tony Blair, who ruled the UK from 1997 to 2007, was his “worst mistake” as ruler. When asked about the same statement, Boris Johnson’s office had no comment.
England and Wales voted to withdraw from the European Union agreement in the 2016 referendum, while Scotland and Northern Ireland opposed their direct neighbors and chose to remain in the European Union. Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon is one of the nationalists pushing for Scotland to hold another independence referendum.
