BOLA – Duarte Gomes analyzes the arbitration of FC Porto – Benfica (Arbitration)

Duarte Gomes, former referee and columnist for A BOLA analyzes the refereeing work of the Super Cup, won by FC Porto against Benfica, 2-0 as follows.

Hugo Miguel directed the Super Cup held yesterday in Aveiro, between FC Porto and SL Benfica. Luís Godinho and Bruno Esteves play the role of VAR. The Lisbon player had an unexpected rival during the game: the indescribable audio that was heard from the two technical benches. No need to comment. Just ask them to listen and tell you about their justice.

On the field, the referee was very confident. He always controlled the game well, was “tough” when he had to be and diplomatic when necessary. Experience is essential on these trips.

At 3 meters the ball will have touched Gilberto’s left arm / shoulder, when he was trying to cut off his head. The offer was cold and well analyzed.

Then, at 25m, the moment of the game here was divided into three phases. Let’s start at the end:

3. Undisputed penalty. Vlachodimos was late and overthrew Taremi. The referee understood that there had only been a promising attack cutoff in an attempt to contest the ball, so he did not notify the GR of Benfica (by analogy at the end of the triple penalty). Reading is accepted.

2. The Iranian striker started from behind (18cm), contrary to the assistant referee’s indication (Marega was leading but did not participate actively). Thanks to the effective intervention of the video referee couple.

1. Greater doubt: at the beginning of the play, Rafa seems to have been dragged by Mbemba. The red striker touched the ball first and then suffered a touch to the right foot of the Congolese defender. The truth is that the only image made available (without repetitions) did not allow to confirm this “feeling”, a reason that justifies not only the non-intervention of the VAR, but above all the benefit of the doubt of the reading that Hugo Miguel made in field.

Until the break, note for two well displayed yellow cards to Weigl and Pepe.

In the second half Sérgio Oliveira and Mbemba were cautioned and in the 71 ‘Taarabt “got away with it” after a high-risk approach in his area: the Moroccan midfielder entered the division with Mbemba but touched the ball first (the rival played later on your foot).
The only clear and visible mistake of the refereeing team, not seeing that Taarabt negligently used his left arm to defend his possession of the ball (he hit Otávio in the face and he should have seen yellow).

Near the end and after a free kick returned from the post, the ball bounced from the thigh to Corona’s shoulder, who adjusted it but without committing an infraction in his area. The second goal of FC Porto and the yellow shown to Seferovic closed a classic with a quality refereeing by the Portuguese international (there were still doubts in the bid with Rafa).
