Black man beaten and killed by security guards in Brazil

A 40-year-old black man was beaten and killed by two security guards at the Carrefour supermarket in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre on Thursday night.

The crime is generating great indignation in the country because it occurred on the eve of November 20, when Black Awareness Day is celebrated in Brazil.

In a note posted on social media, Carrefour said it would take steps to hold those responsible for the crime accountable and said it would terminate the contract with the company of security guards who committed the assault.

“Out of respect for the victim, the store will be closed. We will contact Mr. João’s family to provide the necessary support,” the company said.

“For us [Carrefour], any type of violence and intolerance is not allowed, and we do not accept situations like these from happening. We are deeply shocked by everything that happened and we will follow the evolution of the case, offering all the support to the local authorities ”, the note adds.

The issue also provoked reactions from politicians.

“We were bothered by the brutal scenes of aggression against João Alberto Freitas, a black man, beaten to death in Carrefour. Racism is the origin of all the abysses in this country. It is urgent to interrupt this cycle,” wrote the former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva na social network Twitter.

Manuela D’Ávila, candidate for mayor of Porto Alegre, who will run in the second round of the November 29 elections, commented on the case on Thursday night.

“I was in the debate in Band [TV Bandeirantes] and upon leaving, he learned of the murder of a black man due to the violent approach of the security guards in the Carrefour parking lot. Sebastião Melo, who is also running for the second round of the Porto Alegre elections, spoke out and called for strict measures.
