The emeritus bishop of Viana do Castelo, D. José Pedreira, died this Wednesday at the age of 85, the mayor of Valença informed Lusa, the municipality where the prelate was born.

Manuel Lopes lamented the “loss of a charismatic figure” in the municipality, born in the parish of Gondomil. “He is a son of the earth, he was a person very close to the earth. It is a great loss for Valença and for Gondomil. He was a very esteemed person,” said the mayor. Manuel Lopes added that “D. José Pedreira died in the Braga hospital, where he was admitted.”

D. José Pedreira was bishop of the diocese of Viana do Castelo between 1997 and 2010. He was ordained a priest on July 12, 1959. In 1982 he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Porto, with the title of titular bishop of Elvas. The episcopal ordination took place on March 19, 1983, having as main consecrator D. Armindo Lopes Coelho, then newly appointed bishop of Viana do Castelo, and as a consecrated person, D. Eurico Dias Nogueira, archbishop of Braga and D. Júlio Tavares Rebimbas , Archbishop of Porto.

On October 29, 1997 he was appointed bishop of Viana do Castelo, a position he held until his request for resignation and subsequent appointment of D. Anacleto Oliveira, who has since died.

The bishop of Viana do Castelo, Anacleto Oliveira, died in September, at the age of 74, as a result of the car that was circulating on the Carretera Austral near Almodôvar, in the Beja district.
