Beware along the coast: a steep rise in sea level is expected

The National Maritime Authority warned of a sharp rise in mean sea level on the coast of the continent, as happened this Friday and could be repeated over the weekend and cause floods.

In a statement, the Maritime Authority says that floods are possible, “particularly in regions exposed to the turmoil of the sea. water can reach, in a short time, apparently safe areas“.

The phenomenon, observed in the last hours, especially on the Algarve coast, along the seafront of Cascais and Ribeira das Naus, in Lisbon, is “natural and common”, at this time of year, says the National Maritime Authority .

It results, he explains, from the combination of equinocial spring tides (the highest of the year) “with a stacking effect (accumulation) of the oceanic water bodies near the coast due to the action of the wind and the strong agitation of the sea of the southwest”.

It is expected, the statement said, that the effect is repeated during the weekend, in periods coinciding with high tide, and that dissipates as of Monday, with the end of the period of equinocial high tides.

The National Maritime Authority recommends that the population “take a preventive stance” along the coast, on the beaches and in areas exposed to maritime agitation.
