Benfica detects 17 new cases of Covid-19 since Saturday

Benfica detected 17 new cases of covid-19 among players, technical team and staff during tests carried out since Saturday and is now awaiting a decision from the General Directorate of Health on the team’s participation in soccer competitions.

According to information provided by CMTV commentator João Malheiro, of the 17 infected, nine are players, while the Record advances that there are five players.

The club asked DGS for an opinion on the postponement of the competition matches for a period of 14 days. The health authority sent the same decision to the clubs, noting that only they are the ones who decide “on the players who are isolated due to illness, and on the players who are in prophylactic isolation, considering them risky contacts.”

Benfica has the semifinal of the Football League Cup against Sporting de Braga scheduled for Wednesday.

Given these data, in defense of public health and physical integrity of the athletes involved, Benfica refers to the DGS the decision to appear in competition in the next 14 days.
