Barbara Depression brings a lot of rain and gusts of 130 km / h

The Spanish Meteorological Station has just named the Atlantic storm approaching the Iberian Peninsula as “Barbara Depression”, in view of its evolution towards a probable climate.

In a statement, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has also announced the approach and effects of the Barbara depression that will be felt from Monday afternoon until the end of Tuesday.

“The effects of this depression in the continental territory will be felt fundamentally by the increase in the intensity of the wind from the afternoon of October 19, extending until the end of October 20, with gusts of up to 100 km / h and up to 130 km / h in the highlands ”, you can read in the document.

According to the IPMA, the depression is associated with “a frontal system of moderate to strong activity, which will approach mainland Portugal from the afternoon of the 19th and will cross the entire territory on the 20th, also giving rise to sometimes heavy rainfall. and persistent, especially between the early hours of the afternoon of the 19th and the end of the 20th ”.

On Tuesday a decrease in the maximum temperature is expected, which will vary approximately between 15 and 23 degrees Celsius.

According to the IPMA, an increase in maritime disturbances is also expected, especially on the coast of the southern region, from Monday afternoon until the end of Tuesday, where the significant height of the waves can reach 3.5 meters from the southwest.

In this way, the IPAM placed the 18 districts of mainland Portugal under yellow alert due to the forecast of rains, sometimes heavy and persistent, and also because of the wind.

The yellow warning is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.

In addition to the heavy rains, strong winds are also expected, with gusts that reach 120 km / h in the mountains, especially in the Peneda-Gerês National Park.

The Municipal Civil Protection of Braga has already issued a warning to the population where caution is recommended on roads and public roads in the face of the amount of rainfall expected that can cause floods, water tables on roads and flooding in river beds.
