The municipality of Braga, through the Actum program (Open Call for Art Projects 2020), inaugurated a collective exhibition of visual and visual arts at Casa dos Crivos, with a group of 23 artists. The exhibition is available until January 24 and the value of the works, if sold, will revert in its entirety to the authors.

The exhibition proposal is a reflection on the current state of the world, focusing on the pandemic and the artist’s perception of the moment we live in. The works presented represent this moment of interaction, social or individual, of the artist with the virus and with the present.

Rafael Ibarra, a Mexican artist who has lived in Portugal for five years, is one of the 23 participants. Exhibits a painting that represents the reconstruction of the concept of homeland, thought during the period of isolation, “when we are isolated we think about the past and the future. In childhood and in post-pandemic life ”. The work is titled “Stranger Country” and proposes a circular and ghostly thought about the strange relationship between memory and the present, migration and a new home.

Manecas Camelo, an artist living in the city of Braga, presents a monochromatic acrylic painting for the exhibition, with the motto “Go nowhere”. Creation represents the migration of peoples, with no place to immigrate. “A search for hope and peace, which is not easy to find in today’s world due to problems such as pollution, inequality or the pandemic. People fleeing the war, but have nowhere to flee ”.

The Actum program aims to promote the work of Braga’s artistic community, enhancing the creation of creative content and the appreciation of professional or emerging artists from the region. Bringing citizens closer to local and contemporary artistic practices is another of the organization’s objectives.

The works can be viewed and purchased at Casa dos Crivos and on the online art platform of the “Zet Gallery”, which is one of the organizers and is responsible for curating the exhibition.

Sieve house

Casa dos Crivos, located on Rua S. Marcos in the historic center of Braga, has been considered cultural heritage and property of public interest since 1971. The house is one of the main cultural spaces in the city.

The name of the historic building is due to the main facades, which are lined with wooden structures, which hide the windows and the interior of the house. It is characterized by being a unique example of housing in the urban area of Braga between the 17th and 18th centuries.

The wooden structures, called lattices or hinges, are vestiges of Arab architecture in the city of the archbishops. Their objective was to protect women, from prying eyes, inside the houses. According to the work of Sérgio da Silva Pinto, “Guía de Braga – Arte e Turismo”, “from the seventeenth century, the atmosphere of excessive religiosity made the lattices make Braga look like a Muslim city”.
