In a statement released on Thursday night, the National Maritime Authority explains that the agitation of the sea resulting from this depression could generate waves of six meters, whose duration could be “between 10 and 12 seconds.”

The wind can “register speeds greater than 60 kilometers per hour and gusts greater than 85 kilometers per hour.”

For this reason, the National Maritime Authority recommends, especially in the coastal regions of the North and Center of the country, to avoid walks “along the coast, on the cliffs and on the beaches, as well as the practice of recreational activities in areas exposed to agitation. from sea”. .

“Recreational fishing should also be avoided, more specifically on the cliffs and cliff areas of the coastal fronts affected by the waves.”

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts the occurrence of heavy rains and winds today, in continental Portugal, due to the passage of the Alex depression, as well as strong maritime disturbances.

“Alex’s depression will pass in the Bay of Biscay and it will move to France. In mainland Portugal, we are predicting the occurrence of rains, sometimes heavy, wind with strong gusts and strong maritime disturbances north of Cabo Raso on day 2 [hoje]”, IPMA meteorologist Ângela Lourenço told Lusa.

Today, “a cold frontal surface will cross the territory and the rain can be with certain intensity in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Vila Real, Viseu and Guarda”, highlighted Ângela Lourenço.

According to the meteorologist, “the wind will blow with intensity practically throughout the territory”, but it will be “more significant in the northern and central regions.

Contacted by Lusa, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority said, at 00:30 hours, that there were no incidents to record due to this depression.
