Azores. Well prepared to understand. Everything in the hands of PSD – Observer

The right is ready to understand and the ball is on the side of the PSD. Although the path is far from linear. Less than 24 hours after the regional elections in the Azores, the first signs point to the existence of a common will to overthrow Vasco Cordeiro. But nobody wants to go crazy if José Manuel Bolieiro, regional leader of PSD / Azores, does not guarantee minimum stability conditions governance. CDS doesn’t drop PS without certainty. Enough already has two and one of them is to halve the beneficiaries of the Social Insertion Income. Shuffle and give again: it is the Social Democrats who have to fish the line to get all the support they need.

The PSD looks at the right-wing partners with one idea in mind, the Observer knows: bring the CDS and the PPM to the Government and leave Chega and the Liberal Initiative as parliamentary partners. But it is too early at this stage how the pieces will be distributed.

On the side of the CDS, which managed to elect three deputies and supported the PPM in Corvo, the there is availability and it should be taken seriously. “Winds of change,” Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos said on election night. “Now, the PSD has the responsibility to speak with us.“Says the source of the Christian Democratic leadership to the Observer.

The caveat, however, is clear: there is no possibility of the CDS lining up in the correct ‘gadgets’ without your walking legs. The same is to say that before Vasco Cordeiro presented his Government program in the regional Parliament, CDS must have guarantees that the right does have a majority Or else, you won’t move a muscle to lower it.

At Chega, the accounts are more sensitive, but for now there is one certainty: the the party will vote against any government program presented by Vasco Cordeiro. Whether or not there is a right-wing alliance later is another question.

But what conditions does Chega require? According to what the Observer learned from sources in the party leadership, there are two clear demands: that, at the national level, Rui Rio admits to study a process of constitutional review; and that in the Azores, a possible future government led by the PSD will reduce by half the number of beneficiaries of the Social Insertion Income (RSI) and who are obliged, as coercion, to have a job.

Carlos Furtado, leader of Chega / Açores, corroborates the position of the national board: “I do not reject this option [coligação de direita]. If there is the possibility of removing the PS from the government, it would be a waste of opportunity if it were not done ”. For the Observer, Furtado says that there is a lot of “oppression and lack of democracy” in the Azores due to 24 years of socialist rule, and that it is time to put an end to that. “It was with this message that we got here and it is to take to the final consequences”. Everything will depend on the “good faith” of the negotiating partners, he warns.

On the side of PPM, the unequivocal sign of a break with Vasco Cordeiro came through the voice of Gonçalo da Câmara Pereira, president of the party. “At this time, we are a force to consider in shaping the future government of the Azores. We, in this campaign, have always been saying that the government [regional socialista] he was tired and had no ideas. The people of the Azores demonstrated this by giving them a Red card. All the doors are closed, ”he said.

Less effusive, João Cotrim de Figueiredo, from the Liberal Initiative, nevertheless expressed the willingness to negotiate with the parties on the right, that is, with José Manuel Bolieiro. Once again: PSD has to say the following.

On the night of the elections, Rui Rio kept everything open about the future of the Azores. And, even recognizing that it would not be easy to unite all the right-wing parties in the same boat, the Social Democratic leader left the ring: “Given these results, the governance of the Azores is not simple, because the left does not obtain a majority.”

Bolieiro chose the same strategy: keep the margin to help in all scenarios. “I reaffirm my total willingness to assume responsibilities, but never through a unilateral declaration, always with humility, and available for dialogue and consultation that correctly interprets the will of the people,” said the Social Democrat.

Accounts to the right at a time when the PS is having difficulty controlling nervousness. “[O governo regional] it’s made with broccoli sauce, ”a party source tells the Observer. The Left Bloc has already assumed that it will not be a blocking force in the governance of the PS, but, with only two elected deputies, it is not enough. Socialists are already turning to another scenario: forcing snap elections.
