Egas Moniz Street, S. Bernardo, Aveiro.

“A serious illegality and inaccuracy of citizens who have been bothering people to do their work.” The mayor of Aveiro criticized, in this way, the presence of elements of the civic association ‘Juntos pelo Rossio’ and the Portuguese Association for Environmental Education (ASPEA) in S. Bernardo, this Friday, when the felling of trees was taking place in the vicinity. of EB 2.3 within the scope of ongoing requalification work in that area.

Ribau Esteves addressed the matter in the Municipal Assembly last night, after being questioned, in the period open to the public, precisely by the two activists who attempted the extrajudicial embargo.

David Iguaz (‘Juntos pelo Rossio’) and Joaquim Ramos Pinto (ASPEA) denounced that they had been “intimidated and attacked” by people who would be in charge of cutting down the trees on Rua Egas Moniz, demanding that the Chamber determine the responsibilities. The ASPEA president even said that the alleged perpetrators, two men, who left the site after the PSP call, “looked like more thugs.”

The mayor understood that he should not “talk much” about “more of this teamwork” of the activists in question, since the defiance of cutting down trees is being processed in the courts.

“We will deal with the precautionary measure presented in the Administrative and Tax Court (TAF) of Aveiro as soon as it is notified and now with this extrajudicial embargo formality, analyzing the legal issue,” he began by saying.

In his opinion, however, it is clear that “what the two want is a circus, they do everything possible to bring problems to the Chamber and make news in the newspaper”:

“We are here to manage well, defend the public interest, do works that enable our territories, place the trees in the right places. We want many more trees, but in the right place, ”he said.

“What is not right”, for Ribau Esteves, “and citizens do not have the right to do is reach a public work and disturb it, this circumstance is a serious illegality and in my opinion an immorality”.

“The work continues, people are doing their work. The citizen does not have the right to disturb a work that belongs to the Chamber, has a contractor and is being carried out with total and absolute legality. It is a serious illegality and inaccuracy of citizens who have been bothering people to do their work, “he accused.

The mayor recalled that the two associations filed “more than 12” complaints against the Chamber, overloading the courts “with processes that are not of interest.”

Direct speech

“I thought David Iguaz would come here to announce that the Institute for Conservation of Nature and Forestry (ICNS) failed, once again, to recognize the public interest of Rossio trees. It is the final decision, but subject to the hearing of the interested parties, so the movement has presented a new appeal. The arboreal complex of the Rossio garden, the banana grove or the isolated specimens of some and plane trees and palm trees do not have a relevant public interest for their classification, and the need for their careful conservation is not justified, says the order of presentation of the case . Another defeat of the movement in this second ICNF decision “ – Ribau Esteves.
