AstraZeneca director Pascal Soriot said on Sunday that he expected the British regulator to give the green light to its COVID-19 vaccine next week. The vaccine, which is being developed with the University of Oxford, saw its effectiveness questioned after tests showed it to be 70% on average. With results giving 95% and others only 64%.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, he guaranteed that the pharmaceutical company has “the winning formula to beat Covid-19.” Adding that the vaccine is “100% effective” in preventing the most serious form of the disease. The results have not yet been published in scientific journals, but Pascal Soriot already anticipated that the new data shows that the vaccine is as effective as that of Pfizer and Moderna, which have already been approved. Therefore, the efficiency should reach 95%.

A month ago, the AstraZeneca / Oxford consortium announced an average effectiveness of 70% of its vaccine. Saying that a group that took only one and a half doses of the vaccine had shown 95% effectiveness. Study participants who took both doses showed only 64% efficacy. The contradictory results, the highest being the result of an error, led the authorities to request new effectiveness controls.

Now, the head of the pharmaceutical company has come to announce that these controls are completed and that they hope to see the green light next week to start administering the vaccine.

Pascal Soriot also said that he hoped his vaccine would be effective against the new strain of the virus, which is said to have started circulating in the UK.

Portugal plans to buy 1.4 million doses of this vaccine. The largest expected purchase among all possible vaccines.
