The U1 chip uses positioning technology, known as ultra-wideband radio (UWB), which provides more precise location and spatial perception, so that a U1-equipped device can detect its exact position relative to other devices on the same room.
The iPhone 11 uses this chip to improve AirDrop communication, being able to detect the closest device to present it first in the list of shared devices. However, Apple seems to have even more ambitious plans for the U1 chip, as it includes it in the Apple Watch for the first time.
