The secretary general of the PS welcomed the “seventh consecutive victory” achieved today by his party in the autonomous elections of the Azores and invoked regional autonomy to refer to the Azorean socialists the “construction of solutions” of government.
These positions were transmitted by António Costa, at a press conference, at the national headquarters of the PS, in Lisbon, after the Azorean Socialists obtained 25 of the 57 seats in dispute in the elections to the Regional Legislative Assembly of the Azores, losing the absolute majority.
Before journalists, António Costa quoted a statement made moments before by the president of the PSD, Rui Rio: “Mathematically the PS won.”
Asked about the fact that there is a majority to the right of the PS in the new Regional Legislative Assembly of the Azores, António Costa referred to the fact that “the PS / Açores enjoys total autonomy.”
It is not the responsibility of the secretary general of the PS to pronounce on the path that the PS / Açores will find to, based on the triumph that the Azoreans gave it, build government solutions. I am sure that Vasco Cordeiro will know how to find the best ways to respond to the situation and fulfill the mandate given to him by the Azoreans ”, he declared.
At this point, in addition to the statutory norms of the PS on the autonomy of the Azorean socialists, António Costa invoked the very constitution of the Republic in terms of regional autonomy.
“Regional autonomy means giving the institutions of each of the autonomous regions the powers for their self-government. Therefore, in no way, I will not interfere. I have full confidence in the ability of regional institutions to find good governance solutions.” , He said.
In the press conference, the secretary general and prime minister of the PS also affirmed “to have the greater confidence in the autonomous institutions”.
“I am sure that in the new parliamentary framework the Azores will find the best way to govern. And whatever it is here, we are going to work with the next Regional Government of the Azores. It is essential that there is an excellent collaboration between all for development of the country and the Autonomous Region of the Azores ”, he stressed.
In his initial speech, António Costa referred to the projects that are being carried out in the Azores, especially around the investigation of the sea and space, defended that in the Recovery and Resilience Plan and in the 2021 Regional Financial Framework / 2027 this autonomous community is at the center of several investment projects, and spoke about the political future “and the centrality” of the President of the Regional Government, Vasco Cordeiro, in the field of European institutions.
“Vasco Cordeiro is today vice-president of the Committee of the Regions. And, surely, within a year and a half, he will be the first Portuguese to chair the Committee of the Regions of the European Union,” he declared, thus leaving a note about his expectation that the current president of the Regional Government of the Azores remains in office.
