António Costa says there was a “significant increase” in codes

STAYAWAY COVID is an application for iOS or Android phones that aims to help the country track COVID-19. The application allows, in a simple and safe way, that each of us is informed about the risks of exposure to the disease, through the follow-up of recent contacts.

After António Costa made it known that there are intentions to make the application mandatory, the number of downloads soared as did the issuance of codes.

Once this application is installed, the smartphone announces its presence to all nearby devices using random identifiers that do not reveal personal identities.  The information shared between devices allows STAYAWAY COVID to know which mobile phones it was close to, at what distance and for how long.  The World Health Organization suggests that contacts of less than 2 meters and for more than 15 minutes with someone with COVID-19 should be considered at high risk of contagion.
How the STAYAWAY COVID App works
The operation of the STAYAWAY COVID application is very simple for the end user.  You just have to install it and you don't have to do any authentication or registration.  This application has 3 modes of operation:
1. Not registering a high risk of contagion

By not registering proximity contacts with a high risk of contagion with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, the application informs us of exactly that with the date of the last evaluation.

2. Alert of high risk of contagion

If someone we have been dangerously close to in the last 14 days is diagnosed with COVID-19 and reports the STAYAWAY COVID system, the application immediately alerts us to the risk suggesting that we isolate ourselves and contact the SNS Line 24 (808 24 24 24 ).

3. After the COVID-19 diagnosis

In case of contracting COVID-19, with the diagnosis we will receive a numerical code that will allow us, anonymously and through the application, to inform the STAYAWAY COVID system.  It is this act that allows the system to alert in a safe and timely manner all those who may be infected, even before they have had any symptoms.  Nobody's identity is revealed to anyone.

In the event of a positive test contact, you must enter the code provided by the physician.  In the following infographic you can see how everything works.


"Significant increase" in the emission of infected codes
The António Costa government wants some groups in society to be forced to install the application and the country rebels!  The fines for those who do not do so are also high.
However, given this intention, there was an increase in the downloads of the application and, as the prime minister said, there was a “significant increase” in the emission of infected codes.  António Costa also acknowledges that "there is great ignorance" about this tool. "
