Regarding how the Socialist Party will handle the process of the next presidential elections, the Socialist general secretary said that there will be a time when the organs of his party will comment on this matter.
“Being Prime Minister myself, I will be the person who least interferes in this debate, because I will have to have an institutional relationship with the next President. I will not interfere much in this electoral campaign.“, he warned.
In the perspective of António Costa, a sitting prime minister, during a period of presidential elections, “must remain modest.”
Next, António Costa confronted that his minister and socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos affirmed that he will support a presidential candidate of the BE or the PCP if there is no one from the PS.
The Prime Minister, however, understands that “The members of the Government must have a special duty towards the presidential members, taking into account the relationship that the Government must maintain with the next President, with whom they will have to live for a long time.“.
