Antibody discovered 530 times more powerful than any other

Scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle (USA) have discovered an antibody that fights the new coronavirus and is 530 times more powerful than any of those identified so far.

The team of scientists isolated the antibody, this antibody, from a blood sample of a Washington patient who survived COVID-19, reveals the Correio da Manhã.

The antibody in question is called CV30, it is a Y-shaped protein that interferes with the surface of the virus’s ‘spines’, causing fragments of these to break.

“Our study shows that this antibody neutralizes the virus through two mechanisms. One is that it overlaps the target of the virus in human cells, the other is that it induces the release or dissociation of part of the ‘spines’ from the rest”, explained. Marie Pancera, one of the scientists, told Nature Communications.

Now, researchers hope that CV30 could be useful in the treatment of COVID-19, especially since the mechanism of most vaccines against the disease is based on stimulating and training the immune system to produce antibodies against the coronavirus, which they recognize as ‘threat’ and neutralize it before infection occurs.

However, for this to happen, the antibody must first be tested in the laboratory and only later in humans.
