This Tuesday, Portugal registered 81 more deaths from covid-19, a Tuesday in which the number of hospitalized patients fell to 3,028, 12 less than yesterday. Still, intensive care patients reached a new record: 431.
With these figures, there are now 3,553 deaths caused by the pandemic in the country. There are another 4,452 newly infected, in a total of 230,124, and 7,290 recovered, for a total of almost 150 thousand people who defeated the disease.
And on the 17th, Lisbon (and the Tagus Valley) fell from a thousand daily cases of covid-19. With 812 infections in the last 24 hours, the Portuguese capital region interrupted a cycle of 16 consecutive days, the first in November, always with more than a thousand daily cases of the disease.
It will not be the light at the end of the tunnel that the President of the Government, António Costa, spoke about on Monday afternoon, since, worldwide, the figures for this Tuesday, 4,452 cases, exceed those of last Tuesday. (3817), in a week that ended three days with more than six thousand cases, two of them the worst in history.
To the north, the horizon is still loaded, without glimpsing that light of which the Prime Minister spoke. After the break on Sunday, reflected in the 2,063 cases reported on Monday, the figures amount to about three thousand (2941) this Tuesday, still slightly below the regional records, above four thousand cases a day between November 13 and 15.
In the middle, Zona Centro, registered 353 cases, the lowest figure in the last eight days, for a cumulative 21,406 infections since the start of the pandemic.
The big jump of the day was recorded in the Alentejo, which registered 243 positive cases, a maximum for the region, which had never registered more than two hundred infections in a single day. It may be some effect of weekend registrations, which go up or down depending on local methodologies, but it brings global notifications to 4,547 in the region formerly known as the “granary of Portugal.”
In the Algarve, there is a slight increase in relation to the weekend, to 65 cases, but below the 86 or 95 registered last week, which helped bring the total number of infections in the most central region of the country to 4,238 cases, since the beginning of the pandemic.
On the islands, there are 11 more cases in the Azores (625 in total) and 27 in Madeira, which now has a backlog of 721 reported infections in total.
Register of patients in Intensive Care Units: 431
Although the number of hospitalized patients dropped to 3,028 (12 less than in the previous bulletin), patients in Intensive Care Units increased to 431 (five more than yesterday).
Two deaths between 50 and 59 years
Of the 81 deaths, 43 were registered in the north, 21 in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 11 in the Center, four in Alentejo and two in the Algarve.
As usual, this Tuesday most of the deaths from covid-19 are in patients older than 80 years (20 men and 35 women), with 21 deaths between 70 and 79 (14 men and seven women), three in their 60s and two in the 50s (two men).
