The re-elected president of Chega and announced presidential candidate, André Ventura, defined the former diplomat Ana Gomes as “the gypsy candidate” on Tuesday, after presenting herself as a competitor in the presidential elections in January 2021.

“In a certain metaphor, Ana Gomes is the gypsy candidate for these Presidential elections. I am the common Portuguese, “said Ventura, speaking with the Lusa agency. For Ventura, the former socialist MEP “will not reach the second round” of the elections for head of state.

“I am going to play the second round with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa [atual Presidente e que só anunciará uma decisão sobre uma eventual recandidatura em novembro] and it will be the most spectacular second round in our democratic history ”, he predicted.

Ana Gomes confirmed to Lusa that she will be a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic and that her candidacy will be publicly presented on Thursday.

“Only the most naive believed in reflection and long periods of meditation. Luckily Ana Gomes advances. She is the faithful representative of the minorities that do not work and of the poor who demand the racism of the Portuguese. It is the opposite of my candidacy, which brings together ordinary Portuguese ”, defended the leader of Chega.

Ana Gomes put her first opportunity to enter the race at the Belém Palace on May 17, in a space for television comments, saying that she would reflect on this step, although she did not aspire to be a candidate.

At that time, the former PCTP / MRPP activist criticized the statements of the Socialist Prime Minister and Secretary General, António Costa, on a visit to a car factory, together with the President of the Republic.

Later, Costa expressed the expectation of returning to that manufacturing unit with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa already in a second term as head of state, taking his candidacy and reelection for granted.

“Ana Gomes runs against António Costa and against me. I am opposed to the system that destroys the lives of the Portuguese ”, André Ventura concluded.

In a recent interview with the weekly Expresso, the prime minister considered that if Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa did not run again “there would be a serious problem throughout the country.”

Costa also said that, to exercise the functions of head of government, he will adopt an attitude of “modesty” in the next presidential elections.

Meanwhile, in the PS, the candidacy of Ana Gomes has already received the support of the former parliamentary leader and former MEP Francisco Assis and the leader of the minority trend in the Socialist Political Commission, Daniel Adrião.

André Ventura, who was re-elected on Saturday as president of the National Directorate of Chega, as the only candidate, with 99.1% of the votes, announced that he will begin “a new stage” of the party, which he predicts will become the third political force. in the next legislative elections [2023, se a atual legislatura for cumprida].

Chega will elect the new remaining governing bodies at its II National Convention, scheduled for the 19th and 20th, in Évora.
