Josep Maria Bartomeu announced that by decision of the board of directors to resign the chairman of Barcelona, he will play in the European Super League, a closed competition between the main clubs on the continent that could replace the Champions League.
«This is crucial news for the financial future of the club. Last Monday we approved all the necessary requirements to participate in the future European Super League. This decision to participate will have to be ratified by the elected leadership, ”said Bartomeu, at the time he presented the resignation of the president of the Catalan club.
The resigned president also added that participation in the future competition “will guarantee the economic sustainability of the club, which will never be a sports limited company,” he said, noting that Barcelona maintains the traditional structure in which it belongs to the partners.
However, Bartomeu did not clarify whether participation in the future Super League would lead Barcelona to abandon the Champions League or the Spanish League.
