ALERT to Portugal for plug-in hybrid cars “in front”

The trend in the automotive segment has been electric mobility. Sales of electric or semi-electric cars have skyrocketed in Portugal, even because of the “fault” of state support.

However, Associação Zero warns that ‘front’ plug-in hybrid cars are as or more polluting than conventional cars.

ALERT Portugal: Do 'front' plug-in hybrid cars pollute more than traditional ones?

In a recently published statement, A ZERO warns of serious deficiencies in the regulation of CO2 emissions applied to new car sales in the European Union (EU).

The Asociation reveals that About half of the electric cars sold in the EU are plug-in hybrids - thus considered because they have low autonomies in electric mode, rarely charged, have powerful internal combustion engines, and also tend to be large and heavy (many are SUVs), which makes them present CO emissions in practicetwotwo to four times greater than those counted in the tests.

Furthermore, the European regulation provides for the concession of profits to car manufacturers from the sale of these cars.

Worrying trend in the Portuguese electricity market

In this scenario, ZERO analyzed the sales data in Portugal in 2020 of light electric passenger vehicles published by UVE - Association of Electric Vehicle Users, and concluded that theUntil September the total sales of electric cars accumulated since the beginning of the year grew about 38% compared to the same period of 2019.

These sales are in counter-cycle with total passenger car sales, which decreased by 39% due to the pandemic.

"Worrying" is the increase in the number of plug-in hybrid vehicles until September, and the corresponding decrease in the share of 100% electric vehicles.

During this period, 6,882 plug-in hybrids and 5,470 100% electric cars were sold, corresponding to a distribution of 56% for plug-in hybrids and 44% for 100% electric; This is the opposite of distribution in 2019, in which 100% electricity had around 55% of this market share.

As a result, plug-in hybrids gained ground that their sales more than doubled in 2020 compared to 2019, with sales of 100% electric declining 3%. In comparison, in the EU in the first six months of the year, 100% electric led sales among electric cars, with a share of 52%, although lower than in 2019 (66%), and its sales compared to 2019 increased 40%.

ALERT Portugal: Do 'front' plug-in hybrid cars pollute more than traditional ones?

After all, what is the problem with plug-in hybrids?

  • The plug-in hybrids sold on the domestic market are largely 'front' electric cars, premium segment cars - the brands that sell the most are, in this order, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volvo - with real emissions greater than 200 gCO2 / km, as high or greater than that of a common car with internal combustion;
  • These sales of plug-in hybrids are not going to the detriment of the sales of conventional vehicles, but to the detriment of the sales of 100% electric cars, these vehicles without direct CO2 emissions and pollutants.

ZERO warns of the need for the Government to review these fiscal mechanisms in the State Budgets for 2021, making them more selective, to stop supporting polluting technologies.
