Centro Hospitalar do Médio Tejo (CHMT) opened an investigation process related to the complaint, which will have been initiated from within the institution, of the alleged conditions of negligence in which they will have arrived at the Abrantes hospital and caused a news story from TVI. The information was transmitted to the executive at the meeting on Monday, December 7, by President Fernanda Asseiceira (PS), reiterating that there is no evidence that this is true. The institution now has two more deaths, out of a total of 17 related to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The issue was raised by the Councilor for Citizens of Alcanena, Maria João Rodolfo, asking for a state of the art on the pandemic in the municipality and on the outbreak in Lar de Minde. Last week, TVI reported, citing a source from the Emergency Department, that the institution’s elders arrived at the hospital with poor hygiene conditions, dirty, injured and dehydrated.

Fernanda Asseiceira reported that, after the test on day 2, 39 of the approximately 158 positive cases initially registered were recovered (17 have died since then). “The situation is evolving positively,” said the president, as there are no symptoms. However, no further tests will be carried out, as the contagion capacity will have decreased, he explained, given the time that has passed since the outbreak began.

The president admitted that the institution lived moments of narrowness, that is, in terms of human resources, given that the poorly paid employees were joined by those infected with SARS CoV-2. However, he would explain below, neither the firefighters nor the Social Welfare Center confirm the news of neglect of the elderly, without any evidence of situations “as serious as those denounced by the journalist.”

The complaint will come from a hospital source. Fernanda Asseiceira said that, based on information obtained in a meeting with the CHMT last week, it was decided to proceed with an investigation process to investigate the situation.

Regarding the pandemic in the municipality, which represented eight more cases of contagion on Sunday, the president explained that they are not related to Lar de Minde. The positive cases are largely the result of contacts brought in from other counties due to the work status of those infected, he said, or even trips to the hospital.

Mediotejo.net asked CHMT last week to confirm the news advanced by TVI, and so far it has not received a response from the hospital.

Alcanena today has a total of 343 confirmed cases of illness since the start of the pandemic, of which 179 people are reported to have recovered. There are 20 confirmed deaths related to the pandemic.
