Abuse at Seixal’s home: older people sleeping with food in their mouth, without bathing and wearing the same diaper for hours at a time

The Public Ministry (MP) investigates the Jasmim Geriatric Center, in Seixal. The investigation is the result of a complaint of elder abuse filed by the Trade Union, Office and Service Workers of Portugal (CESP).

The images, captured by workers who denounced the situation, are impressive. Older people sleeping with their mouths full of food, in real danger of suffocation, sleeping in wheelchairs, wearing the same diaper for hours and without bathing for days. It was the images of these that led STCESP to complain about elder abuse against the Jasmim Geriatric Center.

When I hear an old man complaining that he is hungry or that he does not eat or that he has not changed his diaper for more than 12 hours or that he has not bathed for five days … for me this and abuse “.says Fernando Pais, from CESP.

A former home-based worker started the process. He was not satisfied with what he saw from day one: “The way they were all dirty, all dirty. They smelled bad … then they asked to go to the bathroom and told them to wait. That was my first day on the team. They asked to go to the bathroom.” , the colleague raised her hand as if to say ‘go later, wait if you want’ “.

Night shift workers complain that they found users in the worst conditions: “All pissed off, up to the head. With feces. He had nowhere to go. He had to go to the bathroom at 11pm … at midnight … because he couldn’t handle it in bed. Often users.”

One of the videos that TVI accessed, shows the conversation between a collaborator and a user. In it we can hear the user complaining that she has not changed her diaper and that she did not ask either, because “they do not show a good face” when she asks. It was time to go into the night shift and he had the same diaper since 6:00 am. To make matters worse, it was a patient with a urinary tract infection.

Another user complains that he asked to change the water in his dentures. They did not. And the pictures show water full of impurities and molds.

An old user, who did not want to stay home, says that she bathed every 15 days. The other days “they washed, when they washed.”

A former worker reports that it was not possible to call 112, in the event of an accident or sudden illness, without the authorization of the “employer.” And it shows the case of an old man who fell, was injured in the head and did not have the proper help, without first notifying the owner of the house.

Jasmim Geriatric Center says it is a slanderous complaint from a former worker that has not been renewed. He also affirms that he has already requested an inspection from Social Security and that until the conclusion of the report there is silence.
