Cyclone Alpha, which hits land in the Leiria region at 7:30 p.m., will rise to the north but should pass through the districts of Braga and Viana do Castelo, said the source of O MINHO from IPMA.

According to Ricardo Tavares, a meteorologist, this rare phenomenon in Portugal is making landfall in the Leiria region, and should, in the next few hours, ascend to the Porto / Vila Real axis, but without direct passage through the Miño lands.

“The trend is that the cyclone suffers a loss of activity after making landfall, and then must rise to the area of Porto and Vila Real. It could affect the Miño region, but we think it would not be anything serious, due to the loss of activity that it will suffer, ”said the expert.

For Braga and Viana do Castelo, heavy periods of rainfall and some wind are expected, but “nothing very serious”.

Ricardo Tavares confirms that this situation “requires some caution”, specifically by checking the weather warnings for the Minho area.

“If there is a change in our forecasts for the Minho area, we will issue a notice,” he said.

The meteorologist confirmed that the passage of this cyclone is “something very rare on our coast.”

The IPMA reported today that “the depression centered near the coast of the Leiria district, acquired subtropical characteristics during the afternoon, revealing an organized structure in the satellite images.”

The National Hurricane Center, in the United States, contacted IPMA to “make a joint diagnosis of the situation.” The cyclone was called Alpha.

According to projections, “after entering the earth, it should lose intensity quickly.”

“With the approach of the depression to the coast, it was possible to monitor the cyclone with the help of the radar system, which allowed identifying very strong winds at altitude, but relatively close to the surface.”

“It was decided to raise the alert level to orange for wind, rainfall and storm warnings in the directly affected districts, Leiria and Coimbra,” until 23:59.

The IPMA also warns that the Portuguese follow the forecasts and warnings through the official IPMA website [ver aqui].
