The government will carry out a study to find out where to build a new airport in Lisbon. Alcochete is again a hypothesis (with AUDIO) – Jornal Económico

After the aviation regulator failed to build an airport in Montijo, the Government will proceed to carry out a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) process with the aim of comparing various hypotheses to increase airport infrastructure in the Greater Lisbon region.

“The Government undertakes to respect the solution identified in the Strategic Environmental Study”, guarantees the protection of Pedro Nuno Santos in a statement released this Tuesday, March 2.

The negative opinion of the municipalities of Seixal and Moita – two municipalities of the CDU, a coalition of the PCP with the PEV – dictated the end, for now, of the project to build a new airport in Montijo.

This Strategic Environmental Assessment was approved by Parliament under the State Budget for 2021. The proposal was presented by the ENP and another by the PAN and they were approved with the favorable vote of all parties, removing the PS who voted against the proposal.

The current double solution, the Lisbon airport with the Montijo airport as a complement, will be compared with two other hypotheses in this study.

Thus, a dual alternative solution will be studied, in which “the Montijo airport will progressively acquire the status of the main airport and the Humberto Delgado airport as a complementary airport”.

Another possibility will also be studied, the “construction of a new international airport in Lisbon at the Alcochete Firing Range”, the Ministry of Infrastructure announced today.

The National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) announced today that the construction of the new airport for the Greater Lisbon region, designed for Air Base No. 6, between Montijo and Alcochete, has failed.

“ANAC rejects a request for a prior appraisal of the feasibility of the construction of the Montijo Complementary Airport,” the official announced this Tuesday, March 2.

This decision was made because two of the municipalities covered by the new airport (Seixal and Moita) protested against its construction, in view of the two municipalities that spoke in favor (Barreiro and Montijo), and one that did not present its opinion (Alcochete).

“In view of the foregoing, ANAC, in compliance with the applicable legal provisions, decided to reject outright the request for a prior appraisal of the feasibility of construction of the Complementary Airport in Montijo submitted by ANA,” the statement read.
