Portugal recorded another 49 deaths associated with covid-19 on Wednesday; Since November 7, when 48 deaths were recorded, that number has not been that low.
Furthermore, since November 7, there were not as many people hospitalized in Portuguese hospitals. According to the most recent data from DGS, 2,613 people (154 less than the previous day). Of these, 536 are in intensive care units (31 less than the day before), the lowest number since January 7.
The country also registered 1,160 positive cases of infection by SARS-CoV-2 (virus that causes disease COVID-19). In total, 801,746 cases and 16,185 deaths have been registered since March 2020, according to the latest daily update bulletin from the General Health Directorate (DGS).
DGS also reports that 2,659 people were recovered, bringing the total number of people who had COVID-19 and managed to recover to 711,713.
Right now, there are 73,848 active infections in Portugal, 1,548 fewer than the day before.
Lisbon and the Tagus Valley account for more than half of the deaths
The Lisbon region and the Tagus Valley account for more than half of the deaths registered on Wednesday: 28 deaths associated with covid-19. In the North, there were 11 victims; in the Center, five; in the Algarve, three and in the Alentejo, two. There were no casualties in the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores.
It was also in the capital region that almost half of the new cases were registered. There were 546, according to the DGS bulletin. In the North, the second region with the most cases, was 326; in the Center, 137; in the Algarve 45 and in the Alentejo, 22. In the archipelago of Madeira, 81 cases were registered in just 24 hours. In the Azores, the region with the fewest new cases, three new infections were recorded.
Most of the fatalities are still over 80 years of age and, in this age group, mortality is more significant among women. From 50 to 79 years (range that includes three age groups), the number of deaths among men is higher.
