The President of the Republic proposed this Wednesday to parliament to renew the state of emergency until March 16, arguing that “future deflation must be planned in stages, based on the recommendations of the experts and objective data.”

In a note published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa considers that “unfortunately, the situation of public calamity caused by the covid-19 pandemic continues.”

“Experts do not recommend reducing or suspending contact restriction measures immediately, without the numbers falling below the levels most manageable by the National Health Service (SNS), increasing testing rates and surveillance. New variants, that vaccination can cover a part of the population most vulnerable to covid-19, contributing to a growing group immunity, “he says.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa maintains that “future deflation must be planned in phases, based on the recommendations of the experts and on objective data, such as the risk matrix, with more tests and more screening, in order to be successful.”

Therefore, it is necessary to renew the state of emergency once again, so that the Government can continue taking the most appropriate measures to combat this phase of the pandemic, “he adds.

This is the twelfth diploma in a state of emergency that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa presents for parliamentary authorization in the current context of the 19 covid pandemic, and it will be discussed and voted on by deputies on Thursday afternoon.

The renewal of the state of emergency is guaranteed, with the support of PS, PSD, CDS-PP and PAN.

The current period of the state of emergency ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 1. This renewal will come into force in the period between March 02 and 16.
