The Union of Professional Footballers (SJPF) went public and expressed its support for Rúben Macedo, a Marítimo player who committed the penalty in Monday’s game against FC Porto.

Through a statement, the SJPF reveals that the player has been the target of “insults, hateful expressions and attacks propagated by social networks”, appealing to “common sense, respect, dialogue and all leaders with institutional responsibilities for make use of the power of your statements to calm this worrying wave of verbal violence and cyberbullying.

«Resuming an issue that unfortunately marks the current situation of Portuguese football, the Union of Players condemns the insults, hateful expressions and attacks propagated by social networks against the Marítimo player, Rúben Macedo, expressing total solidarity and support in the defense of his professionalism, dignity and good name.

The environment of speculation and communicational terrorism that we are experiencing at the moment is unacceptable, especially against soccer professionals, protagonists of the game who, in a very difficult context, influenced by the pandemic and a tremendously demanding competitive calendar, have done everything Do everything possible to honor his profession and football to the limit of his strength.
