The wife of Mexican drug trafficker “El Chapo” Guzmán, leader of the Sinaloa cartel arrested in the United States, was also detained on Monday by US authorities at an airport in the state of Virginia, the Justice Department announced.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, who has dual US and Mexican nationality, was detained at Dulles International Airport and is due to appear before a federal judge on Tuesday, facing charges related to drug trafficking.

The charges include conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana in the United States, but also to actively participate in Guzmán’s escape from a Mexican prison in 2015 and planning a second rescue for her husband until he was extradited in January 2017. the American authorities.

Guzmán was tried and convicted in 2019 in the United States and is serving a life sentence.

According to US prosecutors, Emma Coronel Aispuro was one of the brains of the famous 2015 escape, which involved the construction of a 1.6-kilometer lighted tunnel, in which a motorcycle was installed on rails, to Guzmán’s shower cell.

To carry out the excavation and prepare for the escape, a piece of land near the prison was purchased, as well as an armored vehicle.

Inside the prison, Guzmán was also equipped with a GPS watch that allowed his companions outside to know exactly his position inside the prison, so that the tunnel was as close as possible to the fugitives.

A witness, a collaborator of the US authorities, was, together with the wife and children of the Mexican drug trafficker, another of the planners of the escape from the Altiplano prison, at a time when extradition to the United States was being prepared.

Throughout its 25-year reign, the Sinaloa cartel controlled the introduction of Mexican drugs into the United States, according to the US authorities’ indictment.

He was also noted for the brutality of his “army of hitmen,” mercenaries with orders to kidnap, torture and kill anyone who stood up to the cartel.
