This Sunday, the leadership of the CDS-PP lost two of its members, Pestana Bastos and Tiago Oliveira, the same day that the National Council (CN) renewed confidence in the president, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos.

The two members of the highest organ of the Christian Democrats asked for their resignation after the virtual meeting of the CN that lasted more than 16 hours, from noon on Saturday, and ended at dawn today. “Confirmed. If I vote against the motion of that leadership, I have to draw the conclusions. I cannot vote in favor of a congress and stay. I understand that a congress was necessary to clarify the direction of the party. The motion of confidence is not enough with re-establishing the management ”, Pestana Bastos told the Lusa news agency.

The other “downturn” of the day was that of the former president of the Porto da Juventude Popular district, Tiago Oliveira, who also advocated an early elective congress.

Since the end of January, several members of the CDS-PP leadership have resigned, mostly from the group Juntos pelo Futuro -whose motion received 14.45% of the votes in the last congress and joined the board after an agreement with Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos- leaving criticism of leadership performance.

On January 28, former CDS-PP vice president Filipe Lobo d’Ávila and members of the Executive Committee Raúl Almeida and Isabel Menéres Campos announced that they had resigned from their respective positions.

The following day, the members of the CDS-PP National Political Commission, Paulo Cunha de Almeida and José Carmo left the leadership, while José Maria Seabra Duque and Tiago Leite left the party’s studies office.

Meanwhile, José Miguel Garcez, from the Executive Committee, as well as Altino Bessa and João Medeiros, who were members of the National Political Commission, also left. Francisco Kreye, from the National Political Commission and who has been JP’s general secretary since the days when Rodrigues dos Santos was president of the youth organization, also stepped down.

The motion of confidence to the National Political Commission, presented by the president, was approved today by the National Council with 54% of the votes in favor, through a digital secret vote of 265 councilors (using a method that included emails, messages cell phone and security codes). There were 144 votes in favor (54.3%), 113 votes against (42.6%) and eight abstentions (3%).
