The process of German aid to Portugal began on January 25, following a request from the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, to the German Minister of Defense, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, and has now been completed with a team of 26 healthcare professionals, including six physicians, 40 mobile ventilators and 10 stationary ventilators, 150 infusion pumps, and as many hospital beds.

Speaking to Lusa, the doctor who will be in charge of the mission said that the team of military health professionals, with competences in Intensive Medicine, will focus mainly on a Lisbon hospital, ensuring that support can also be given to others. in the country.

“We know that the health system in Portugal is, at times, very overwhelmed. Hospital staff and, especially, intensive care units have reached their limits. We want to support them with our team, but also with clinical material to at least alleviate the situation, ”stressed Ulrich Baumgärtner.

According to a joint statement from the Portuguese Ministries of Health and Defense, German health professionals will remain in the country “for a period of three weeks, with their replacement scheduled every 21 days, until the end of March, if necessary.” .
