From the outside, they look like normal military transport aircraft. But the interior is adapted for flying mega-ambulances, capable of transporting up to 40 patients in moderate condition, or 16 in Intensive Care. There are two models: the A400M used by Germany and the A330 MRTT which is already in service in France, and which will continue to be used by six other European countries in a multinational NATO fleet.

These ambulance planes are one of the possibilities on the table to relieve the hospitals of Greater Lisbon. Defense sources told the CM that Covid patients in intensive care could be transferred to Germany. In this pandemic, the Bavarian country has already helped France and Italy in this way. These medical evacuation planes have also been essential for the transfer of patients within their own countries; Imagine, for example, taking patients from Porto to Faro.

According to the same sources, Germany is the most “qualified and prepared” ally in the evacuation of critical patients. The withdrawal from the island of Madeira to their country, in April 2019, of 12 Germans who survived with serious injuries from the bus accident that killed 29 tourists is recalled. It happened on a plane that, curiously, was a massacre Wednesday. But the intensive care kit, operated by 25 doctors, nurses and technicians, can be mounted on one of the latest aircraft.
