The Disciplinary Council (CD) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed, this Wednesday, that the Sporting midfielder João Palhinha will have to play a suspension match, after having seen the 5th yellow of the season on the last day thus remaining out of the derby with Benfica.

The 25-year-old saw Fábio Veríssimo show him the 5th yellow card of the season in the Liga NOS ten minutes before the end of regulation time and thus has to complete a penalty match, now confirmed by the FPF CD.

The play and the card caused great outrage among the referees and Sporting and at the end of the match, the Alvalade club’s communications director, Miguel Braga, promptly announced the lions’ intention to appeal against the decriminalization of João Palhinha. Sporting coach Rúben Amorim was also outraged by what happened, but declined to comment on the case at the end of the match.

However, this decriminalization will only be possible if the match judge, Fábio Veríssimo, admits that he was wrong to record the offer in the match report.
