“Christmas? It would be useless to have imposed very restrictive measures”, underlines António Costa – O Jornal Económico

Prime Minister António Costa considered this Thursday, in an interview with “TVI”, that the imposition of very restrictive measures during the Christmas period would not have practical effects. In the first interview after the announcement of the confinement that will be felt from midnight on Friday, the government official regretted that the fact that the measures were lightened, there were “less restrictive” behaviors.

“The fact that we don’t have more restrictive measures has led to less restrictive behaviors. We wanted to combine individual responsibility with collective solidarity. It would be useless to have imposed very restrictive measures, for example on the number of people per house, ”said António Costa.

Asked about what failed for Portugal to have a death toll from Covid-19 of more than 100 deaths a day for four days, the prime minister considered that “we did everything possible to avoid this situation. We managed to withstand the lockdown in the middle of the second wave of the pandemic ”and he admitted that“ the general environment today is less feared in relation to the pandemic ”.

Without wanting to blame the lower restrictions at Christmas for the cause of the figures that are currently detailed in the DGS daily reports, António Costa stressed that “there are other factors such as the cold wave since the pandemic is growing exponentially, even in countries that they were more restrictive at Christmas ”.
