TVI / Observer Poll: Ventura surpasses Ana Gomes for the first time in voting intentions

In the latest Pythagorean poll for TVI and the Observer, Ana Gomes and André Ventura emerge tied for second place with 11.4% of voting intentions. Now, a week later, the candidate supported by Chega managed to overtake his opponent, albeit with little margin, and reach second place with 11%. Ana Gomes now has 10.8%.

As for the rest of the candidates, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa loses ground, but continues to win 66.7% of the votes in the first round, less one percentage point (pp) than last week, Marisa Matias also fell 0.3 pp , settling now at 4%. In the opposite direction, João Ferreira rose to 3.2% (+0.6 pp) and Tiago Mayan Gonçalves with 2.3% (+0.2 pp).

The growth of Vitorino Silva stands out, registering the highest increase of the week, with 2.1% (+1.7 pp).

Notoriety

The vast majority of Portuguese know Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, André Ventura, Marisa Matias, Ana Gomes and Vitorino Silva as candidates for the Presidency of the Republic. The same is no longer the case with the liberal Tiago Mayan Gonçalves and the communist João Ferreira.

Even so, Mayan Gonçalves was the candidate that rose the most in the space of a week, with another 10.3 pp. The rise of Vitorino Silva and João Ferreira also stands out, with 6.2 pp more. Of the rest of the candidates, all increased their level of notoriety except for Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who lost 0.2 pp

Despite being surpassed this week by André Ventura, Ana Gomes is still the preferred candidate for second place with 46%, followed by Chega’s deputy with 24% and Marisa Matias with 7%.

The majority of the Portuguese believe that the presidential elections will be resolved in the first round. To be more specific, only one in 10 respondents believe there will be two rounds.

Interviews and discussions

According to the Pitagórica survey for TVI and The Observer, almost half of those surveyed (45%) have seen an interview or debate with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Almost 30% admit to having seen and 25% have no intention of doing so.

In contrast, the majority of those interviewed did not see or consider seeing an interview and / or debate of the candidates João Ferreira, Vitorino Silva and Tiago Mayan Gonçalves.

The match between Marisa Matias and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was the one with the highest audience (20%), followed by João Ferreira and André Ventura (17%) and André Ventura and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (16%). The least seen were Marcelo and Ana Gomes and Marisa Matias with André Ventura, both with only 8%.

Most of those surveyed think they will go head-to-head between Marcelo and Ana Gomes.

The survey was carried out by Pitagórica for TVI and the newspaper Observador between December 29 and 30, 2020 and January 2 and 3 and 7 to 10, 2021. With 629 telephone interviews, with a confidence level of 95.5% , for a maximum margin of error of 4%.
