The 8,400 doses of Moderna’s vaccine, intended for private sector health professionals, arrived in the country on Wednesday, January 13, the National Health Service (SNS) reported.

Last week, the European Medicines Agency approved Moderna’s vaccine and Portugal is expected to receive 227,000 doses by the end of March. Like Pfizer, it also takes two doses of Moderna’s vaccine to achieve immunity.

On Monday, the Health Minister had already announced that Moderna’s vaccines would arrive in the country this week. Marta Temido predicted that “Moderna will deliver 8,400 doses this week.” The minister explained that Moderna’s vaccines were intended for priority health professionals in private hospitals, “who have collaborated with the NHS in treating responses to patients with Covid-19.”

On the same day, Marta Temido highlighted that Portugal received “159 thousand vaccines from Pfizer, between December 26 and January 4”. To these numbers was added the delivery of another 79,950 Pfizer-BioNtech vaccines, delivered in the country on Monday morning.
