The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) keeps mainland Portugal and Madeira on yellow alert for the cold forecast for this weekend, and indicates that the average temperature for next week will remain below normal values of the season. Although the scenario is not as extreme as in neighboring Spain, where the snow paralyzed Madrid this Saturday.

Most of the northern, central and interior districts recorded negative lows again this Saturday: the Guarda district is the one with the lowest temperatures (-4 degrees) and the Algarve is the region with the highest lows (2 degrees in Faro and 4th grade in Sagres). In Lisbon, the temperature varies between 3rd and 9th grades on Saturday and between 2nd and 10th grades on Sunday. In Greater Porto the cold will also continue (this Saturday with a minimum of -1 degrees and a maximum of 9 degrees).

Only the autonomous region of the Azores, where minimum temperatures are above 9 degrees on all the islands, escapes the cold warning.

On Sunday, temperatures rise slightly, but the IPMA maintains the yellow alert for mainland Portugal. Madeira is no longer under yellow warning and turns green, as is the Azores.

As for the average weekly temperature, “values below normal (-6 to -1 degrees) are expected for the entire territory in the week of January 11 to 17,” says the IPMA website. In the following week, the temperatures remain at the usual values of the season and in the last week of January they rise.

As for the snow, the IPMA also predicts for this weekend that it will fall from an altitude of 400 meters. Regarding the state of the sea, the IMPA indicates that there will be waves from the northwest with two to three meters, gradually increasing to 2.5 to 3.5 meters from the afternoon.
