Prime Minister António Costa received Justice Minister Francisca Van Dunem on Monday at the São Bento Palace to address the controversial election of José Guerra as European prosecutor, RTP said.

The public television station added that António Costa “expressed full support and confidence” to Francisca Van Dunem so that the governor remains in office.

In this Monday’s debate between Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and João Ferreira, on TVI, the President of the Republic confronted the prosecutor’s case and ended up confirming that, in conversation with António Costa, the Prime Minister told Marcelo that there was full trust in the Minister of Justice.

The controversy over the election of José Guerra as European prosecutor, to the detriment of Ana Carla Almeida, prosecutor of the Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DCIAP), where the most complex processes of economic and financial crimes are investigated, led last year to Minister of Justice giving explanations to the Parliamentary Commission for Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees.

The head of the DGPJ, Miguel Romão, resigned today after the controversy over the inaccuracies contained in the curriculum of the European prosecutor José Guerra.

In a statement, the Ministry of Justice (said that the Director General of the DGPJ made his place available today, taking into account the latest events related to the resume of Prosecutor José Guerra, a decision that was accepted by the Minister.

Francisca Van Dunem also announced her entire willingness to go to parliament as soon as possible after the PSD request to clarify news that says that the Government has given false information to justify the election of José Guerra as European prosecutor.
