In just three weeks, around 18,000 of the 34,358 Britons living in Portugal have applied online to change their current residence document for a new title proving their resident status under the UK’s exit agreement from the European Union.

The figure was advanced this Monday by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) and concerns citizens who used the digital portal on Brexit (brexit.sef.pt), launched on December 14, 2020 in collaboration with the Embassy. from the United Kingdom in Lisbon.

The foreigners service also assured that a new card, which grants them resident status and guarantees the protection of their rights after the Brexit transition period, will begin to be issued “soon”.

“Until the card is issued, and after submitting the registration form on the new portal, UK citizens can download a proof of that application in digital format, a supporting document with a QR code, which can be used whenever they travel, as proof of their residence in Portugal ”, explains SEF.

The SEF will begin this month to notify the British to arrange a visit to a service station, in one of the 20 commissioned municipalities, to collect the biometric data that will appear in the new residence permit, but points out that their documentation will continue to be accepted . until the new residence permit is issued.

In an interview with the Lusa agency, released this morning, the prime minister defended that the differences within the European Union exist and must be assumed and resolved through dialogue, since “Brexit has already broken.” “I think it would be bad to try to pretend that there are no such differences, problems are only resolved when they are assumed and there is a frank conversation about them,” said António Costa.

What impact will the Brexit deal have?
