If the Aximage poll for DN / TSF / JN correctly reflects the sentiment of the electorate, then the CDS is one step away from extinction. The disastrous polls have been a constant for the party led by Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos, who obtained 4% in the last legislatures, a result that precipitated the resignation of Assunção Cristas.
Rodrigues dos Santos admitted that he will go to the Regulatory Entity of Social Communication (ERC) to complain about the survey. In a Facebook post, he writes that the polling company “decided to get ahead of the Carnival and started rehearsing some antics,” he said it was “a tailor poll, done at the boss’s command, in which he gives the PS to go up – despite recent scandals – and the CDS, which has denounced them, falling to 0.3%. It says that “it will urge ERC to take the necessary measures to regulate the drilling companies’ procedures, to avoid deception, lack of technical rigor and ‘antics'”.
The truth is that, one year after being elected president of the CDS, negative polls pursue the mandate of “Chicão”. The poor results have been attributed to an alleged problem with the polls, the media and those who did not support it, that is, the parliamentary group that, supposedly, was going to harm the leadership. On the side of the critics, the drop in the polls reflects only what they consider the lack of vocation of Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos for the position.
It is not foreseeable that there is someone who wants to discuss the party until the Presidential elections. In an article in PUBLIC published on Saturday, Francisco Mendes da Silva, who resigned from the CDS district of Viseu, proposed that Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos be a candidate for the Lisbon Chamber, similar to what Assunção Cristas and Paulo Portas did. A proposal that elements close to the leadership consider more of a find for the fire where critics want to burn the leader.
The truth is that, judging by recent polls, the risk of extinction of CDS seems imminent. The problem is that among the board’s critics, opinions differ, between those who argue that Rodrigues dos Santos must fulfill the mandate until the end (January 2022) and those who believe that there must be an internal dispute in the short term for the CDS it is presented in the municipalities with a new face. If this last theory were successful, it would be necessary to request the convening of a national council within the first three months after the presidential ones to convene an extraordinary congress.
In a November interview with the Observer, Deputy João Gonçalves Pereira advanced with the name of Cecília Meireles to the leadership of the CDS. At the last national council, Raúl Almeida, CDS national director, urged the deputy to leave Parliament to make way for Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos, who is next on Porto’s list.
