This Saturday, several personalities from Portuguese culture and society signed a petition for a new Portuguese version of the Disney film. soul, asking for the entry of black voices that represent the “historical importance” of the moment.

The film is generating controversy, since it has a black protagonist and the voice of black actors in the original version, but in the Portuguese version, the dubbing was done by white actors, specifically by Jorge Mourato, who voices the main character.

“In Portugal, Disney treated this film as one more, not having the same criteria and ignoring the original intention of choosing Afro-descendant actors to give voice to the characters. It is not about the usual good work in the dubbing made in Portugal, nor about the quality of the actors in the Portuguese version, but here there is an expectation of respect for the original intention and for what it represents historically: to be the first animated film with a black protagonist. , interpreted by black voices ”, says the petition now made public.

The text is signed by seven personalities: Ana Sofia Martins, Dino D’Santiago, Mamadou Ba, Mayra Andrade, Nástio Mosquito, Pedro Coquenão and Sara Tavares. The signatories maintain that the film has the “supposed purpose of wanting to portray the musical culture and the Afro-American community”, being that “the whole process was very rigorous in the choice of the scriptwriters, technical personnel and, of course, the actors who life to this film assumed as a manifesto against inequality in the entertainment industry ”. And they continue: “Various personalities and academics were taken into account to ensure that the diverse black community felt comfortable with the representation of the work.”

At 5:30 pm in Lisbon, the petition already had more than 280 signatures.
