The CDS considered this Wednesday that “the remuneration of the top management” of TAP is revealing “of the confusion and anxiety crisis that has been installed” in the airline and demanded that the guardianship minister “make an additional effort” in the restructuring .

In a statement, the vice president of CDS Miguel Barbosa accuses the Government, and in particular the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, to manage “the TAP issue in a clumsy and nebulous way”.

“The latest in the sad series of silly episodes, senior management pay, is especially revealing of the crisis of bewilderment and anxiety that has arisen around TAP,” he says.

On Monday it emerged that three members of the airline’s management saw their salaries increase, with the approval of the government, including the chief executive and the chairman of the board of directors.

The next day, the president of the TAP Board of Directors, Miguel Frasquilho, announced that he has resigned from the salary increase he has enjoyed since Humberto Pedrosa left, because he wants to continue being part of the negotiations about the future of the company.

The infrastructure ministry assured, in turn, that TAP “did not have any increase in salary costs” with administrators, adding that positions with the Board of Directors fell 33% “in gross terms” since March.

For the centrist Miguel Barbosa, is “unacceptable and inappropriate” that the “question of the remuneration of the board of directors” of TAP “arises” when the company “is about to lay off a considerable part of its workforce, and in which taxpayers are called to help”. According to the CDS, Minister Pedro Nuno Santos, who “represents the collective interest” in TAP, “cannot try to distance himself” from this issue.

In the statement, the CDS demands that the owner of the infrastructure paste, which oversees TAP, “shake quickly to avoid another ruinous business ”, pointing out“ lack of transparency ”to the company’s restructuring plan, presented“ without the support of studies and data ”and“ without discussion of alternatives ”.

Portuguese divided between salvation and bankruptcy

A survey of Aximage for TSF, Diário de Notícias and Jornal de Notícias reveals that 42% of the Portuguese agree that TAP should be saved with public money and 37% say the government should have let them go bankrupt the Porter.

In the north of the country, only 29% agree with the injection of three billion euros for 2024 and 44% believe that the Executive should have closed the doors of the company.

North is the the only region of the country that is overwhelmingly in favor of bankruptcy. The data from the Porto Metropolitan Area show another reality: 45% agree with the public rescue, while 42% believe that the end of TAP would have been the best solution.

No South and in the archipelagos of Azores and Madeira52% agree with the rescue of the airline compared to 32% who defend bankruptcy.

The survey also reveals that 21% of people do not know or do not answer the question.

TAP’s restructuring plan, delivered in Brussels this month, provides for the suspension of company agreements, a measure without which, according to Minister Pedro Nuno Santos, it would not be possible to restructure the airline.

The document delivered to the European Commission foresees the dismissal of 500 pilots, 750 cabin crew, 450 maintenance and engineering workers and 250 from the rest of the areas. The plan also provides for a 25% reduction in the group’s payroll (30% in the case of legal entities) and in the number of aircraft that make up the company’s fleet, from 108 to 88 commercial aircraft.
