Covid-19: 76 more dead and 7,627 infected in the last 24 hours in Portugal

To date, Portugal has 76 more deaths related to covid-19 and 7,627 new cases of infection by the new coronavirus, the highest daily value since the start of the pandemic, according to the General Directorate of Health (DGS).

The number of new cases registered in the last 24 hours is the highest since the beginning of the pandemic, surpassing that of November 4, when 7,497 new cases of contagion by the new coronavirus were registered.

The epidemiological bulletin of the DGS also indicates that 2,840 people are hospitalized, 56 fewer than on Wednesday, of which 482 are in intensive care.

Since the start of the pandemic, Portugal has registered 6,906 deaths and 413,678 cases of infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, of which 72,496 are active today, 4,291 more than on Wednesday.

Health authorities keep 88,534 contacts under surveillance, 2,556 less than the previous day.

The bulletin also reveals that 3,260 more people were reportedly recovered.

Since the start of the epidemic in Portugal in March, 334,276 people have recovered.

Regarding the 76 deaths registered in the last 24 hours, three less than in the previous period, 37 occurred in the North, 16 in the Center region, 15 in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo and seven in Alentejo and one in Madeira.

Also according to the DGS bulletin, the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region registered the highest number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections in the last 24 hours (2,801). Since the start of the pandemic, the region has registered 133,739 cases of infection and 2,392 deaths.

In the northern region, 2,588 new infections have been reported, representing 209,964 cases and 3,194 deaths so far.

In the Central region, 1,415 more cases were registered, with 47,721 infections and 996 deaths.

In Alentejo, a further 524 cases were reported, for a total of 11,123 infections and 218 deaths since the start of the epidemic in Portugal.

The Algarve region has reported 219 new cases today, totaling 7,698 infections and 71 deaths.

Madeira registered 44 new cases. This autonomous community has 1,601 infections and 13 deaths from covid-19.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, 36 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, totaling 1,832 infections and 22 deaths.

Confirmed cases are distributed in all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 185,953 men and 227,579 women in Portugal, according to DGS data, according to which there are 146 cases of unknown sex, which are under investigation, since these data are not provided automatically.

Of the total deaths, 3,588 were men and 3,118 women.

The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in the elderly over 80 years of age, followed by people between 70 and 79 years of age.

Portugal began this Sunday the first phase of vaccination against covid-19, with the first batch of 9,750 doses of the vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech to be distributed by health professionals.

The state of emergency, enacted on November 9, was renewed until January 7, with a mandatory curfew in counties with the highest risk of contagion.
